Future Air knowledge cards summarise current challenges, efforts and solutions around air pollution in China. Air pollution – and its impacts on the environment and human health – is a major issue in China right now; pollution control and mitigation has become the first priority for most mayors in China.
Considerable resources have been expended on a variety of solutions, including upgrades to industrial equipment, investments in clean energy, low-emission vehicles, and higher emission standards. To date, these unilateral measures have achieved only moderate success; truly effective pollution control will require increased collaboration across professions, industries and cities. By taking a more integrated and holistic approach effective pollution control is achievable within the next 10 years, resulting in a measurable improvement in air quality across China.
In addition to government and industry commitments, public engagement is crucial to the success of better air pollution management and prevention. By disseminating information about the effects and impacts of air pollution as well as existing pollution control efforts, public awareness and behaviour can be improved.
The cards are organised into five categories, or lenses, based on their main area of impact: Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, and Political, collectively referred to as STEEP. Each carefully designed card depicts a single issue. The issues chosen for inclusion in this set of cards are the result of knowledge gained from research, interviews, workshops and interaction with our global network, as well as consultation with Arup’s broad spectrum of specialists. Future Air knowledge cards are an engaging tool for cultivating discussion and can help stimulate innovative thinking towards solutions for air pollution in China.
