A report revealing important trends influencing the future of retail and looking at some of the likely influences of these trends on retail environments. The report looks at changing consumer expectations and behaviours and assesses the technologies impacting the retail experience.
What influencing factors are shaping the future of retail? What role will physical stores play in a future dominated by e-commerce? How will retailers effectively deliver goods and services across all channels? What is the future of the brand?
Retail exists at the complex nexus of real estate, IT&C, logistics, and popular culture. The global retail environment is extremely challenging due to increased market saturation and commoditization. Most retailers are also challenged by balancing new multi-channel sales strategies with pressures to consider the environmental and social impacts of their operations.
The Future of Retail report is the continuation of a long research initiative started by Foresight + Research + Innovation in 2004. The publication reveals cross-sector trends in manufacturing, distribution, sales, and consumption. A variety of case studies illustrate changes in consumer expectations and behaviours, and the impacts that technological developments will have on the digital and physical retail experience.
The report was developed in collaboration with Arup’s Retail business and involved extensive consultation with experts across a wide range of related disciplines, both within and outside of Arup.
