Lujiazui in Pudong, Shanghai is home to the largest and most capital-intensive CBD in Mainland China. It is part of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone and the only national development zone designated as both ‘Finance and Trade’. Lujiazui community retains the Workers’ New Villages built in the 1950s. This reflects the essence of Shanghai’s development. The community has become one of the benchmarks for China’s development, and is expected to shape China’s urban construction and development going forward. Lujiazui now hopes to build a smart community. The aim is to provide a reference model for the operation and development of cities; to create new ideas, new thinking and to provide innovation for current and future city development.
Arup is proposing a vision for ‘Lujiazui 2025’. The aim is to provide an innovative thinking for Lujiazui and its regional development, enable implementation of new ideas and inspire more innovation to emerge. It analyses Lujiazui’s challenges and expectations and categorizes them into five themes. These are: Transportation, Environment, Life, Society and Community Building. The outcomes will form a major part of Lujiazui government Community White Paper 2015. Over the coming decades Lujiazui’s development needs to address both existing and new challenges, and meet the expectations of an evolving community. This will ensure that Lujiazui continues to be a model for urban community development and management. The people of Lujiazui and beyond are encouraged to join us in developing more innovative ideas for the future of Lujiazui. That way, Lujiazui can truly be the place where people want to live, work and play.
