The World Economic Forum's SlimCity initiative provides a global
platform where Mayors and the private sector can exchange solutions to
deliver resource efficiency at the city level. As Knowledge Partner to
the Forum, Arup researched, designed and produced a series of
ground-breaking cards to inspire committed action.
Launched in
Davos, at the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in January
2009, the cards deepen awareness of the role cities can play in
bridging the transition towards sustainability. To achieve this, each
of the cards showcase outstanding exemplars from around the world. The
cards are divided into three themes to reflect SlimCity's current focus
on urban mobility, smart energy and sustainable buildings. They were
researched with the collaboration of the Forum and their constituent
members.
In producing the SlimCity cards, the Foresight group
drew upon our experience researching the on-going Drivers of Change
programme -- identifying issues most likely to have a major impact upon
society and business.
Together the cards constitute a unique
record of global best practice in cities. They highlight
solution-oriented actions and policies that cities can adopt now, taken
from less-economically developed countries as well as from the
developed world; and they provide city leaders and their
administrations with practical solutions to many of the complex
problems they currently face.
