To help the firm make full use of and shape the development of the most useful BEM tools, Arup’s Foresight, Innovation & Incubation team is engaged in an ongoing review of new design software and innovative applications of existing software.

TED 2011: Ted University

Every participant at the TED conference can offer to make a presentation at part of the pre-TED event called TED University. These are short talks that range from how to build a wind turbine to Pakistani flooding to snippits from movies that are soon to come out. Here are some of the highlights as seen by Chris Luebkeman.

ICE Future of UK Aviation Industry

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) wanted to instigate a national debate about the future development of UK airport infrastructure. In 2009, they commissioned Arup’s Foresight team to design and lead a collaborative process to build a set of plausible scenarios for the future of UK aviation.

This new set of 175 cards investigates leading drivers in greater depth that have particular relevance to the work of Arup. They include energy, waste, climate change, water, demographics, urbanisation and poverty.
Short films

The Future of Connected and Sustainable Cities

A short film looking at the challenges and opportunities facing cities. It looks at how information and communications technology can help reduce the carbon footprint of urban areas in an effort to tackle climate change. Other issues addressed include energy security, transportation, urban sprawl, consumption and waste.
